Visitor: Lorna L. Hemm Reference: From another genealogy resource - can't remember Location: Elkton, Oregon Contact: llhemm@teleport.com Date: Wed, Jul 08, 1998 at 00:23:28 (EDT)Comments: You have a great home page. I am researching the following family names: Thompson (Norway-Minnesota-California); Hemm (Germany-Missouri-California); Williams, Gottschalk, Kraus, Syfritt. Just getting started and don't know all the protocol. My great grandfather, Peter Hillestad Thompson was born in Norway in 1839. His father apparently drowned at sea and Peter and his two brothers immigrated to America. Where they landed and when is unknown but Peter and one brother fought for the North in the Civil War. Peter married Ragnhild Oldedatter Spilde who was born in Hardonger, Norway and immigrated with her mother and sister, Elizabeth to the US. Peter and Ragnhild Rachel had eleven children (four of whom died while very young)--my grandfather was the second child and was born in Harmony, Minnesota on Jan. 25, 1871. Other Thompsons born to the family were Caroline, Blanche Marie, Thomas Christian, Hannah Amelia, Henry Louis, Peter Robert and Clara Elizabeth. I am researching the Thompson/Spilde family. My grandfather on my father's side, George Paul Hemm, was a physician in St. Louis, Missouri in the early 1900's. My father was born in St. Louis in 1909. I am just beginning, but am sharing this information in the hope that someone else may be able to share information on my family roots.
Looking through the Ęttarbok for Granvin my great great grandmother had sisters named Ragnhild and Elisabeth that emigrated to America. These were the only pair of sisters with those names to do so that are listed. It's possible that we're related and that Anna's parent(s) emigrated to MN and are buried there??
I sent an email to the addess listed, but it came back undeliverable.
Harmony, MN is about 180 miles west of Lodi, WI. Carrie Spilde Crothers took a trip to Lodi in the late 1920's. The article that Percy wrote mentions visiting her many cousins in the Lodi area, but does not mention anything about relatives in MN. http://www.geocities.com/crothershouse/percytrip.html
