I went to see my mother this weekend, and I looked
through the Spildo section of the "Ættarbok for Granvin". This is
what I found:
There is only ONE possible Anna Spildo in the Spildo
section. This is the entry for her family:
104.
Olav Larsson N. Spildo 90a 1799 - 1883
Married 1826 to Brita Hansdtr. Skår
38h 1808 - 1884
Gnr. 90, bnr 2 [i. e something like
farm number 90, holding number 2]
Farmer 1825 - 1854. [referring to
Olav Larsson]. Olav received the deed from his
mother, and the royal deed for the parsonage in 1832 for 400
spesidalar [up to 1873 Norw. monetary unit - a
silver coin worth two rix-dollars] Olav was
usually/colloquially called "Brit-Ola".
Children:
a. Lars 1827 - 1913 N. Spildo 130
b. Hans 1829 - Married to Kari Heggestad,
Hafslo, Sogn. Hans went to America 1849.
c. Per 1833 - America, died unmarried.
d. Brita 1833 - America 1857
e. Jens 1841 - America, died unmarried
f. Ragnhild 1844 - America 1866
g. Elisabet 1848 - America 1866
h. Anna 1852 - America 1871
Anna had no uncles on her father's side. Her father
Olav Larsson was an only child. I could find no "Jon O. Spildo"s in
the Spildo section of the ættarbok that could be the "John O.
Spilde" you're looking for. HOWEVER: Anna's brother Hans looks
like a likely candidate to me. The name Hans is a short form of
Johannes, which would translate into John in English. And "Carrie"
must be the US spelling of "Kari". (i. e. Kari Heggestad;
Hans(=Johannes=John?)'s wife.

In the first entry (leaving 1875) Amund is listed as
unmarried with domicile "America" and the comment reads "Carpenter.
Four years in America"
And then I found THIS (in the list of
emigrants from Ulvik to America) - which made me less certain about
my Hans=John theoy...

Hans Olsen Spilde (= "John" Olsen
Spilde???). Born 1830. Marital status: widower (in 1906).
Occupation farmer. Domicile: State of South Dakota. Destination:
Brooking, South Dakota. American citizen. Reason for travelling:
Been home to Norway to visit.
Being a widower in 1906 fits, and DOB fits, but
Brooking SD? (my knowledge of SD geography is VERY limited...
limited to Rapid City and Cary Grant/North by Northwest to be
precise...;-). Hans aka John is still a possibility, but wouldn't
he by this time stick to John even when visiting Norway? (it would
definitely leave him w some explaining to do w his Norwegian family,
but still)
From your web site: Adolph was adopted by his aunt
and uncle John O. (1830-1917) and Carrie (1832-1905) when his mother
Anna Spilde died.
But as I said earlier, there are no other Anna
Spilde's in the Ættarbok, and no other candidates for "uncle John
O.", so this is as far as I got.
Would you be interested in buying a copy of the
Ættarbok for Granvin - IF it's still available from Granvin
kommune? Or else I could probably help you with photocopies of the
Spildo section - but that will take time. I live in Harstad
(northern Norway) now, and it will probably be a while before I can
get my hands on my mother's copy again.
