Subject: Re: Spilde
Hi Jason - I was looking for something else and came across this:
From "Some Pioneer Families of Wisconsin - an Index" - WSGS 1977, page
118
Spilde, Hans b. 1813, Norway; d. 1893; m. Burgeson, Anna
Spilde, Lars H. b. 9 Feb. 1854, WI; d. 18 Apr. 1942; m.Davidson, Anna
page 17
Burgeson, Anna - b. 6 Jan 1823, Norway; d. 22 mar. 1914 - m. Hans
Spilde.
I didn't find the other listing for Anna Davidson.

Ok, now that the Carrie Spilde daughter of Jens / Kari Heggestad has
been linked I believe I have a link between my great great grandparents
and my Norwegian ancestors. Thanks Sidsel! :-) This
Hans, Kari, and Anna Spildo also links Dag Spilde of Norway as a 3rd
cousin to my dad and his children as my 4th cousins.
I'll chart out all the names and dates soon.

Subject: Carrie Spilde / Kari Heggestad
Hi Jason,
You're now "nearly positive"
that Hans is John O?? ;-) Oh ye of little faith... Would it help
knowing that there's also strong evidence that Kari Heggestad =
Carrie Spilde?
There are quite extensive church
registers available for Hafslo. I located Kari Heggestad, born 2nd
December 1833. Her parents were Jens Pedersen
(b. ca.1807 d.1876) and Kari Nielsdatter (b. ca.1809 d.1847)
- With naming practices of the
time, Kari could be known as "Kari Heggestad", or, equally likely,
"Kari Jensen". I would think "Jensen"
would be most practical in the US, and "Heggestad" the most likely
choice in Norway, at least in rural areas like Hafslo and Granvin.
- Kari's DOB(December 1833) fits
with Carrie Spilde listed as 46 y.o. in the 1880 Wisconsin census
- There seems to be a pattern of
naming the eldest daughter "Kari" after the mother in this family.
Well, at least we appear to have 4: Kari - Kari Nielsdatter - Kari
Jensdatter(=Carrie Spilde) - Carrie Spilde jr
From "Ęttarbok for Granvin":
b. Hans 1829 - Married to Kari
Heggestad, Hafslo, Sogn. Hans went to America 1849.
From notes on your web site:
This is from the Nov. 2, 1905 issue of the Brookings
Register.
Carrie Spilde
Born - America
Died - Oct. 1905 - Brookings, SD
Parents - Jensen (last
name, I assume?)
Married John O. Spilde 8 July 1859
"Born - America" in the obituary must be a
mistake. The rest fits with other available information.
I've included copies of relevant Heggestad records below.
regards,
Sidsel
I started by looking for Kari
Heggestad in available emigration/passport records. No sign of
Kari, but I found another "Jensen Heggestad" that looked promising:
Then I went on to the chuch registers
for Hafslo, looking for this Peder Jensen Heggestad's family. It
turns out Peder is one of Carrie's brothers.

Father's occupation: husmann
(crofter/cotter). Name of father's farm: As you can see, this has
been registered in various creative variants -
Turnebakken/Tornebakken/Bakken/Heggestad etc, i.e. Tornebakken or
Turnebakken - a cotter's holding belonging to the Heggestad farm.
Carrie is Kari b. 1833. There are two daughters
named Kari and two named Anne/Anna. Reuse of names when children
died in infancy was common practice at the time.

The date/year data is obviously placed under the
wrong column headings in this database, at least in the Enlish
language version that Digitalarkivet provides. Here "Year" should
be 1830, "Date of death" 09.08 and "Date of burial" 14.08. Similar
corrections apply to all data from the "Burials in Hafslo" database.
